Chapter Four

Jade woke to the sound of arguing voices outside the room. Groaning, she turned on her side. She felt sunlight on her face. Opening her eyes, she woke up, a little disoriented. This was certainly her room but it smelled a little different, of someone else. Lucas. Her breath caught in her throat. So last night hadn’t been a dream after all.

“I’m asking again, what the fuck is a dirty werebear like you doing with my daughter?” Hearing her father’s voice, Jade froze.

“She’s my fiancée,” someone added. George.

Most men would be intimidated by her father. Alpha to the local wolf pack, Jade and her father have never been close. Jade’s mother died giving birth to her and her father Steven never warmed up to her. To Steven, Jade was merely a bargaining chip.

The healthy and hale daughter of an Alpha was mate-worthy material in Steven’s books and God knew their weakening pack needed to be strong again. No surprise Steven paired George and her together. George’s father was the Alpha to the wolf pack in the next town. Their mating would seal an alliance.

Jade had always been a good girl and an obedient daughter. She got perfect grades at school and dated whoever her father set her up with. Jade never expected to fall for George’s smooth charms and handsome face. She thought she really had it all, the perfect life, until cold reality woke her up.

George saw her the way Steven did—someone he could breed and produce strong shifter offsprings with, but he didn’t love her. No. George couldn’t be tied down, he said. He needed to live wild. Big words for a coward who couldn’t win challenges on his own. George always used his father’s enforcers to fight for him.

God. Jade had been an idiot to stick with him for so long. Taking a deep breath, she headed out of the room. As if a magnet connected them, Lucas turned his head. He broke into a grin, seeing her. Lucas didn’t seem to care he stood there, butt naked and glorious. He looked completely at ease, facing down Jade’s father and former fiancé.

She approached him and made a startled but pleased noise when he brought her close, banding his muscled arm around her waist.

“Jade, what’s the meaning of this?” Steven demanded with narrowed eyes. “How could you? George will never take you, now that you’ve fornicated with this—”

“Where’s the ring I gave you?” George demanded.

Jade smiled at him sweetly. “Threw it away, after I saw you fucking two, or was it three of your pack groupies. Wait a second, was that blonde even legal?”

George reddened. Growling, he came at her, but Lucas sent him stumbling back with one shove.

“Go ahead, pathetic fucker. Touch her again and I’ll break your arm.”

“You have no idea who you’re talking to, outsider,” George yelled, rising to his feet. “Jade’s dad won’t stand for this and neither will my father.”

Jade leaned against Lucas, gripping his arm in worry, but he flashed her a reassuring smile.
